NOMINATIONS have now opened for this year’s Sheffield Legend who will have their name added to the Walk of Fame outside the Town Hall in the city centre.

The next local hero will join the likes of Lord Sebastian Coe, Sean Bean, Def Leppard, Michael Palin and London 2012 Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis, by having their name immortalised in the paving with a special plaque.

Following the announcement of each legend, those honoured are then invited for a pubic unveiling ceremony.

Internationally acclaimed novelist and critic, Dame Margaret Drabble is the most recent Sheffield Legend.

Nominations will be open until Friday, February 22, before the top nominees are presented to an independent panel.

A Sheffield Council spokeswoman said: “When the initiative launched eight years ago, hundreds of nominations were received from the public for their heroes to become Sheffield Legends and, so far, 18 celebrities have been honoured. They represent a cross-section of accolades, but all have a strong affiliation with Sheffield, either being born in the city or having lived here for several years.

Members of the public can vote for their Sheffield Legend on the Welcome to Sheffield website or by sending a letter to Sheffield Legends, Marketing Sheffield, Floor 1, Fountain Precinct, Balm Green, Sheffield S1 2JA.
