Colin Rose’s worries (March 30) about extra air pollution caused by 20mph limits in town centres are unfounded.
The extra acceleration needed due to stop/start traffic means that according to the AA, “ along shorter roads with junctions and roundabouts, limiting acceleration to up to 20mph reduces fuel consumption”, meaning fewer accidents, less pollution and it’s cheaper.
Sheffield Green Party have called for 20mph limits on residential roads since 2009. In our council budget proposals for 2014/15, we proposed a 20mph limit in the city centre, where most people are injured in accidents. Labour rejected this as electioneering.
