No light relief for dog walkers

WALKIES are a hazardous affair for dog lovers in Southey Green - where a lack of street lamps means they're having to take their pets out by torchlight.

The street lights failed on Wordsworth Avenue over a week ago, and locals have been told it's likely to be another week before they're switched back on.

Electricity firm CE Electric, which manages the supply, even admits street lighting has "not been its top priority" in the wake of the floods.

But resident Andrew Wragg says the situation is unacceptable.

"A couple of days to fix a problem is fair enough, but not 15 days - that's beyond a joke when you can't see your hand in front of your face," he said.

Andrew, aged 38, has been forced to use a torch to light his way when he takes pet dog Diesel for an evening walk from the home he shares with partner Linda Spray.

"It's completely pitch black at night," he said.

"We have got 15 steps going up to the house and a car parked on the street outside - I've told the electricity firm that if we fall and hurt ourselves, or if anything happens to the car, I will sue."

Ann Walker, from CE Electric - part of Yorkshire Electricity Distribution - which manages the electricity supply, said there was a fault affecting street lights.

She said test work had been carried out to find the cause, with repair work following as soon as possible.

"We apologise if residents feel we have been slow in responding, but we will be getting the work done as soon as possible."

She added; "The situation following the floods has meant street lighting has not been our top priority."
