Nine per cent rise in the crime across South Yorkshire

Sheffield's worst robbery hotspots are revealed today after a nine per cent rise in the crime across South Yorkshire in five years.

Community figures in Sheffield say they are ‘disappointed’ to see the rise in robberies – including a 25 per cent increase in raids on businesses between 2011 and 2015 – and today called for more police funding.

In total, there were 3,875 reported robberies in five years.

In Sheffield, the city centre was the area with the most robberies, including both businesses and people, with 463 between 2011 and 2015. The figures, revealed under The Star’s Your Right To Know campaign, reveal Burngreave was the next area with the most robberies with 255, followed by Sharrow with 220, Broomhill with 138 and Firth Park with 132.

But South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Alan Billings said: “I don’t think we have a gang problem or a gun problem in Sheffield, or a big problem around armed robberies.”
