Speaking at a special reunion at The MAGNA Science and Adventure Centre in Rotherham last night, Nilsson admitted helping the Owls lift the League Cup and gain promotion to the First Division was one of the highlights of his career.

The ex-Sweden international told The Star: “It is fantastic to have been part of a special period in Sheffield Wednesday’s history. I had some great years at the club. Wednesday will always have a special place in my heart.”

Many of the players who were in that side attended the anniversary evening, including David Hirst, John Sheridan, who the was matchwinner in their League Cup success at Wembley, Viv Anderson, Phil King, Chris Turner, Lawrie Madden and Peter Shirtliff.

Manager Ron Atkinson and club physio Alan Smith also attended the sold-out event, which was organised by the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme.

Captain Nigel Pearson and Danny Wilson were unable to make the evening.

“It was absolutely fantastic to meet up with everybody,” said Nilsson. “It had been a long time since I had seen some of the guys. It feels like a couple of months ago!”

Nilsson, now the Gothenburg Under-17 coach, has revealed the secret behind the success of that side.

“We enjoyed playing together,” he said. “We had a great team spirit and we all fought hard for each other.”

The nostalgic night, hosted by Sky Sports News HQ presenter and Community Programme ambassador David Garrido, consisted of a two-course meal, a question and answer session from the Class of 91’ players, photo opportunities, a silent auction and a raffle.

All funds raised will go to the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme.
