Night to remember for fans of the Big O

For the hundreds who were there, you know there was probably no better place to be, to celebrate what would have been The Big O’s 80th birthday.

Although he could not hope to emulate the great man’s hair-raising ability, Barry Steele’s sincere tribute to Roy Orbison made it a pleasure to sit there, and enjoy the songs we love so much.

These ranged from the ’50s opener Ooby Dooby, the chart hits of the ’60s through to the late ’80s, with performances from the Mystery Girl album, and the Traveling Wilburys.

Barry Steele was well supported by his band, especially keyboard player Boogie Williams, who did a fine Joe Cocker-style rendition of With a Little Help from my Friends, then in the second half launched into the piano-pounding rock ’n’ roll of Jerry Lee Lewis with, Great Balls of Fire and Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ on.

There were many great songs performed by Barry Steele, but my favourite was California Blue.

It became obvious to me that he was saving one particular song for the encore, and sure enough, the instrumental intro to Oh Pretty Woman brought the audience to their feet for a rousing finale.

Thank you Barry Steele & Friends, for a night to remember.
