Niche club plan shelved

PLANS to reopen the former Niche nightclub building in Sheffield city centre have been withdrawn.

Workers from the old venue on Sidney Street, shut down by police in 2005 under a crack house closure order, had formed a new management company called Next Level Entertainment and wanted to reopen under the name Nemo’s.

The club would have been open until 6am and operate on a members-only basis.

Police were concerned, however, that the membership would be drawn from former Niche clientele. They objected to a licensing application on the grounds of prevention of crime and disorder.

The application was due to be heard by Sheffield Council’s licensing board last week - but there were not enough councillors available to hold the meeting. It was rearranged for yesterday but Next Level decided not to proceed.

Sheffield Council said: “The application has been formally withdrawn.”
