NEWS IN BRIEF: THREE people charged with the attempted murder of a Barnsley student have appeared in court.

Daniel Whiteley, 19, of Darton, is in a critical but stable condition in hospital after he was found with multiple injuries in a water-filled ditch in a Manchester park last Tuesday.

Michael Brownlie, aged 26, 21-year-old Nicholas Lindsay and Katie Mongan, 18, all of Longsight, Manchester, appeared at Manchester City Magistrates’ Court yesterday, charged with attempted murder.

They were remanded in custody to appear at Manchester Crown Court on Monday, March 19.

A HOUSE was set alight in an arson attack while the occupants were out. When firefighters arrived on Dovercourt Road, Manor, Sheffield, at 11pm on Sunday the front door and hall were burning.

An arsonist was also to blame for a BMW ablaze on Zion Lane, Attercliffe, at 8.30pm on Sunday, and a car engulfed in flames on Grange Road, Handsworth, at 7.40pm on Sunday. The car was so badly damaged firefighters were unable to determine its make or model.

A GOOSE was rescued by firefighters after getting trapped between rocks close to a steep drop near a riverbank in Oughtibridge. Fire crews were alerted to the bird’s plight at 9am on Sunday and used a 10.5m ladder to reach it. The goose was handed over to the RSPCA to be checked.

SHEFFIELD customers of telephone and internet company TalkTalk suffered five hours of disruption yesterday morning after equipment broke down. The company has apologised for the inconvenience, caused by a fault in a control circuit.

LIGHTS that were broken for more than a month at flats in Sheffield have been repaired. Northern Powergrid said the lights on the homes of elderly and disabled people at Remington Road, Parson Cross, were working by Friday.

FIREFIGHTERS tackled a blaze in a quarry at Greenhill Lane, Wirksworth near Chesterfield. Ten large disused tyres had been set on fire on Saturday afternoon. Police were called to investigate.

A FRYING range at a chip shop in Curbar Drive, Inkersall, caught fire. Crews from Chesterfield and Staveley used foam to bring it under control on Saturday morning.

A GIRL aged 15 was found with serious injuries at home in the Heeley area of Sheffield. Officers were called on Friday evening. There are no suspicious circumstances.

A TRIALS bike caught fire in Locke Park, Barnsley, after developing a fault on Sunday morning. Firefighters extinguished the flames.
