Newcastle United fans want Sheffield Wednesday to join them in the Premier League

Sheffield Wednesday may have taken six points off Newcastle United this season, but Magpies' fans aren't holding it against them.

The Toon Army have already celebrated promotion back to the Premier League having finished the season as champions and now they want the Owls to follow them up.

Independent Newcastle United website, The Mag ran a poll this week, asking supporters who, of the four teams competing, they would prefer to see win the play-offs.

And there was a sizable majority in favour of Wednesday.

In fact 40% of those polled said that they hoped the Owls would end their 17-year exile from England's top flight by winning at Wembley later this month.

Fulham and Huddersfield polled 28% and 24% respectively while there's not much love in the north east for Reading, with just 7% wanting the Royals to take a Premier League place.

The site stated that some of the possible reasons for wanting Wednesday to go up were "Will definitely sell all tickets for St James Park; easy to get to away match and for older Newcastle fans in particular, this one has the biggest nostalgia appeal."

There was a wariness in amongst that though, with one reason given for potentially not wanting the Owls to win the pla offs being: "Would likely spend big similar to Fulham and would have a good go at staying up – meaning a team/club that potentially could compete with Newcastle when it comes to staying up/establishing yourself in the Premier League."
