New Year’s honour for former Wimbledon champion

Former Wimbledon winner Ann Jones leads the list of sporting awards in the New Year’s Honours.

Mrs Jones, who beat Billie Jean King to win the 1969 Ladies title, is made a commander of the British Empire, after many years of work in tennis administration.

Other notable recipients include a CBE for West Ham United vice-chairman Karren Brady.

Mrs Brady, one of the stars of hit BBC TV show The Apprentice and wife of former Sheffield United football star Paul Peschisolido, is honoured for services to entrepreneurship and women in business,

David Bernstein, chairman of the Football Association, is also made a CBE.

Rachel Yankey, the most capped England women’s footballer with 129 appearances is made an OBE.

London Marathon race director Dave Bedford, a former 10,000m world record holder, also becomes an OBE.

Katy McLean, captain of the England women’s rugby union team, is made an MBE.

An MBE also goes to Stuart Cummings, the much-respected rugby league referee who retired as RFL match officials director this year.
