An armed gang were caught on camera chasing a Sheffield man down a busy road moments before he was killed.
A jury at Sheffield Crown Court was shown CCTV footage of three men following Zabair Hussain down the middle of Staniforth Road in Darnall shortly after 11.20pm on New Year’s Eve, while carrying what the prosecution allege was a baseball bat.
It is alleged Mr Hussain was kicked, punched and beaten unconscious with a baseball bat by the three men before being run over moments later.
Idris Sadiq, aged 30, of Darnall Road, denies a charge of murder.
DC Eleanor Welsh told the court the three men chasing Mr Hussain were Sadiq, another man called Sohail Khan who has fled the UK and an unidentified third male.
She said the footage showed the unknown man ‘swinging something towards Zabair’ followed by the object being passed to Khan.
The group, including Mr Hussain, then go out of shot for around three minutes, which is when the prosecution say the attack took place.
DC Welsh said the next shot shows the three men going back towards Khan’s car, with Khan carrying something in his right hand ‘that appears to be a long, cylindrical object similar to a bat or a length of wood or pole’.
The three men were then seen getting back into the car and driving off in Khan’s Peugeot, which has never been recovered by police.
CCTV was also shown to the court from around five minutes before the confrontation which DC Welsh said showed Mr Hussain talking to the group inside the Peugeot.
Sadiq accepts being at the scene but denies any involvement in the attack.
Ben Nolan QC, prosecuting, said on Wednesday that 41-year-old Mr Hussain, who lived on Staniforth Road, is believed to have ‘for some reason, given offence to these men’ before the attack.
He said Mr Hussain was beaten unconscious and ‘left for dead’ in the middle of the road moments before being run over by a passing car.
