New use for old buildings

A NEW development involving old Victorian buildings in Sheffield city centre has been granted planning permission.

Cartwright Pickard Architects’ scheme on Arundel Street is a £3 million privately-funded scheme involving existing listed buildings converted into ground floor and office spaces above, with additional new buildings housing 72 beds of student accommodation.

A spokesman for the architects said: “In keeping with the original street layout, the new buildings are organised around a central courtyard, providing valuable amenity space to the development’s users.

“Great attention to detail has been given towards ensuring the new development sits well within in its historic setting. Of the multiple Victorian buildings currently in situ, we aim to retain and enhance the existing listed buildings.”
