New town centre market opens in Hoyland

Hoyland Market, on a former car park off Southgate, will have 30 stalls.

It will also have a range of other facilities including a disabled toilet, a wash room and a 26-space car park.

There will be three kiosks fronting High Street and modern signage to welcome shoppers.

It replaces the outdated Market Street site and facilities.

The market is opposite Boyes’ new 6,000 sq ft department store which, will be opened in Hoyland as part of the plan to create a new town centre.

To celebrate the opening, a family fun day is to be held at the market on Saturday, May 28, from 9am to 2pm.

There will be a town crier, face painting, balloon modelling, giveaways, an ice cream van and performances by local buskers.

Matt Gladstone, Executive Director for Place at Barnsley Council, said: “The new market will provide traders and shoppers with improved facilities and is the first piece in the jigsaw for the redevelopment of Hoyland.

“We look forward to seeing lots of local people enjoying the new market at our family fun day.”

Developer Resilienti is working with Barnsley Council on the project to transform Hoyland town centre.

The £4.5m scheme also includes a 74-space free car park now open on the site of the former NHS medical centre off Duke Street and a new 12,000 sq ft supermarket.
