Labour MP Gill Furniss held on to Labour's Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough seat in a by-election triggered by the death of her husband Harry Harpham, who died of cancer nine months after being elected in the 2015 general election.

Ms Furniss was walked to the despatch box by colleagues Paul Blomfield and Clive Betts, where she was sworn in by a House of Commons clerk.

She was followed by Christopher Elmore who was elected to Labour's safe south Wales seat of Ogmore, after former minister Huw Irranca-Davies stepped down to fight for a seat in the Welsh Assembly.

Both received cheers from the Labour benches, including from leader Jeremy Corbyn, deputy leader Tom Watson and shadow commons leader Chris Bryant.
