New sexual health clinic opens in Sheffield after city centre closure

Last week we reported concerns that young people in Sheffield had been ‘let down’ after the clinic in Mulberry Street closed.

Despite all services being transferred to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, a Sheffield charity boss claimed there would be ‘little provision’ for sexual advice, testing and contraception in the city centre.

But, fortunately, a new sexual health facility is being opened this week in Division Street by youth charity Sheffield Futures – which had actually been planned months before the closure announcement.

Emma Aley, service manager at Sheffield Futures, said: “We had intended to expand the services we offer and had planned to offer some sexual health testing, advice and contraception.

“It’s a good coincidence, and it’s great there will continue to be provision in the city centre.”

Sexual health nurses from Sheffield Teaching Hospitals will staff the facility, which is being held on a Tuesday and Saturday.

Emma said: “We offer a range of services here so it can be a one-stop shop for young people. It’s a friendly, welcoming environment too.

“As a lot of other things are going on in the building, it has the additional advantage that people don’t know what you’re going in for either, if you have concerns about that.”

The clinic at Star House offers testing and screening, pregnancy tests, contraceptives, emergency contraceptives and advice every Tuesday between 3.30-6pm. On Saturday, between 9.30am-12.30pm, young people can get everything apart from emergency contraception and contraceptive pills.

All services at the Mulberry Street clinic are being transferred to the Royal Hallmashire Hospital, in Broomhill.

Dr Claire Dewsnap, clinical lead for Sexual Health Sheffield, said: “We are not reducing or stopping any sexual health services, we are relocating services.”
