New safety campaign thanks to South Yorkshire fire service funding

A campaign to reduce fires caused by fake goods is to be launched in South Yorkshire thanks to fire service funding.

The Doncaster Council led ‘Fakes Cause Fires’ campaign will use posters, videos and pocket sized information cards to educate residents about the dangers associated with buying counterfeit goods, including hair straighteners and mobile phone and e-cigarettes chargers.

It is due to be launched across South Yorkshire this autumn and will encourage people to report fake goods to Trading Standards, persuade them to use ‘stop smoking’ services and generate referrals for free home safety checks carried out by firefighters.

The campaign is to be funded with £43,000 awarded from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority’s Stronger Safer Communities Reserve.

Areas identified as most at risk will be targeted over the next two years.

Dozens of registered charities, community organisations and partner agencies came forward and applied for grants from the £2 million pot.

Groups were able to bid for between £5,000 and £250,000 to support projects which reduce injuries and save lives.
