A NEW rugby club for juniors and seniors in Sheffield aims to increase playing opportunities in the city.

Based at Tapton School, Hallamshire RUFC has been set up with a view to addressing a shortage of youth rugby in the area, while at the same time providing regular social rugby for its senior members.

“There are kids in Sheffield on waiting lists not able to play,” said club founder and head coach Brian Spolander, who set up the club after struggling to find opportunities for his two sons to play rugby.

“Some clubs don’t have youth set-ups and others are full. There aren’t many rugby pitches in Sheffield and most of them are a lot further out than this.”

Hallamshire will launch its youth rugby programme with an Easter Camp, at Tapton School, on April 2 and 3, for boys and girls of all age groups from five to 14.

Hallamshire’s senior side will make its debut in a number of friendlies against other local teams over the last few weeks of the season and new players are actively encouraged to get in touch.
