Organisers of the Sheffield Hallam parkrun, which takes place every Saturday in Endcliffe Park, say it is “no longer sustainable or safe to run along the pavement on Rustlings Road”, which forms part of the existing course.

“Runners overtaking on the road not only jeopardises the future of the whole event, but also more importantly risks a serious accident,” they wrote in a blog post.

A new route has been created to bring the parkrun entirely within Endcliffe Park – and will come into force “in about three months time”. It will still involve two laps of the park although some sections will involve runners going in opposite directions.

The weekly event will also be renamed Endcliffe parkrun, but Sheffield Hallam running stats will remain valid.

The post continued: “When Sheffield Hallam parkrun was originally set up, there were just 36 participants at the first run on 10 July 2010, and no one could have anticipated just how much the event would grow. It regularly attracts 500-plus runners these days, with a highest attendance record to date of 884 on 4 May 2019.”

Organisers say they have tested the new route – measuring exactly five kilometres – and said it was the only “viable option” for the site after several other routes were “tried and rejected”.

Sheffield Hallam parkrun is one of six weekly parkrun’s in the city.
