New record on Scout numbers

SOUTH Yorkshire scouts recruited 481 new members in the past 12 months – an increase of 6.7 per cent on the previous year.

Total numbers in South Yorkshire now stand at 7,678. The impressive surge in membership – the seventh consecutive year of expansion – has helped cement scouting’s position as the largest co-educational youth movement in the country.

A spokesman said a large part of the increase is due to the number of teenagers in South Yorkshire joining, with 68 Explorer Scouts signing up in the past year.
