Motorists who currently use an informal town centre parking area can expect to start being charged in future as the council seeks to convert the site into a pay and display car park.

The former magistrates court car park, off Main Street, has been out of formal use since the courts closed and were demolished around two years ago.

A hardstanding which remains can accommodate 60 vehicles and the council now want to use that, along with the existing access road, as a pay and display site for 50 cars.

However, that could be turned over to a 50 bay pay and display car park, operating from 8am to 6pm Monday to Saturday.

Planning permission is needed for the change and an application has now been made, with the decision on whether to allow it expected to be delegated to a planning officer.

The site is expected to form part of the Forge Island redevelopment in future, designed to regenerate part of the town centre.
