Sheffield’s Labour group will tonight select a new deputy leader for the city council.

Current deputy leader Harry Harpham is stepping down from his role today as he concentrates on his Parliamentary election campaign.

He is the Labour candidate for Sheffield Hillsborough and Brightside, where David Blunkett is retiring.

The Star understand that Coun Leigh Bramall, cabinet member for business, skills and development, is one contended for the deputy role.

Other backbenchers and Coun Terry Fox, a former cabinet member and chairman of the leader group, are said to be interested in the position.

Coun Harpham remains cabinet member for homes and neighbourhoods and a councillor for Darnall until May.
