New council homes to be built in Goldthorpe, Barnsley Council announces

Barnsley Council’s current housing plan is to deliver 21,546 additional homes between 2014 and 2033.

Construction has begun on nine new council homes in Goldthorpe, as part of wider council investment into the area.

After construction started in May, the new two- and three-bedroom homes are expected to be available in spring 2027.

The homes are to be built with sustainable and energy-saving features, including air source heat pumps, solar panels and batteries.

This Barnsley Council project will also provide new public green space, connecting Market Street, Cooperative Street and Victoria Street.

The new housing and green-space developments are part of the wider Towns Fund investment into Goldthorpe, and also supports the council’s housing strategy to increase affordable housing.

Councillor Andy Cudworth, Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Assets, said: “This development is another important step in the regeneration of Goldthorpe and a clear sign of the investment being made in the area.

“As well as delivering much-needed new council homes, the scheme will bring better public spaces and environmental improvements that will have a lasting positive impact on this neighbourhood.”

Following construction by Keystone Construction Limited, the new homes are to be let and managed by Berneslai Homes.

Steve Feast, Chief Executive at Berneslai Homes, said: “These new homes will give local people access to high-quality, affordable council housing in a well-connected part of Goldthorpe.

“We’re proud that Berneslai Homes will manage the properties and support future tenants to settle into homes that are modern, energy-efficient and built for the long term.”
