New computer system causing '˜chaos' for hospital patients in Sheffield

A new computer system launched in Sheffield hospitals is causing '˜chaos' for people booking appointments, according to one patient.

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust, which runs the Northern General and Hallamshire hospitals, introduced Lorenzo software in October last year.

But since its introduction, the electronic patient record system has caused ‘chaos’.

Patient Ian Betts, aged 81, of Fulwood, said: “This new IT system is causing chaos for patients. I’ve had appointments cancelled last minute. I’ve even turned up to an appointment to be told the doctor I was supposed to see was giving a lecture in Doncaster.

“I’ve got no criticism of the staff, they do a wonderful job. This system is causing a nightmare for patients – and staff.”

Dr David Throssell, medical director at the trust, said: “I would like to apologise to Mr Betts and any other patients who have been inconvenienced by some technical issues with our new computer system. This has been one of the biggest changes we have implemented for many years and it will have significant benefits for patients, but inevitably there have been some teething problems which we are resolving with our technology partners.”
