SCRAP metal thieves have damaged a new bridge in Doncaster only a month after it was erected

Police are appealing for information after metal handrails and supports were stolen from the bridge.

The bridge, which spans the River Torne on Carr Lane between Rossington and Wadworth, was built in June as a replacement for an old bridge that was also targeted by metal thieves.

They used power saws to take the metal handrails and supports from the new bridge on July 18.

Metal fencing around the bridge was also stolen.

Coun Cynthia Ransome, Doncaster Council’s cabinet member for communities, said: “This is a disgraceful and shameless act of theft by some very selfish people looking to ruin the enjoyment of others.

“We know that this bridge is used on a daily basis by lots of people and it’s a shame their journeys are being disrupted.”

Information to Sgt Liam Wood at South Yorkshire Police on 0114 220 2020.
