Cole’s Corner is the latest addition to Abbeydale Road, continuing a national trend for appealing places that sell meals, drinks and vinyl LPs.

The place has permission to open until 1am, and was due to launch last night with a party called an ‘election night howl’ as there was a full moon on December 12.

Records, rather than the café, will be the main stock-in-trade of Cole’s Corner.

The name has a double meaning – it is a nod to the popular meeting spot outside the former Cole Brothers department store in the middle of Sheffield that provided the title for an album by city musician Richard Hawley, and a reference to a certain Nicole who came up with the idea for the venture.

Specialist genres including jungle, reggae and Afrobeat will be stocked, with many titles sourced directly from labels.

Every Saturday, DJs will play sets based on their personal favourite records which will be available in the shop.

The owner’s concept is for visitors to buy a beer, take their time perusing vinyl and ‘immerse themselves in the experience’ – opening hours are later to attract customers after they have finished work.

The interior features upcycled items, including light shades made from old LPs.

During the day, seasonal soups will be served alongside paninis – a basic menu, but one that is fresh and sustainable. Sheffield Organic Growers is supplying the vegetables and bread will come from Forge Bakehouse, also on Abbeydale Road.

Italian coffee is on offer to start with, while the beer – in cans – is from Abbeydale Brewery, which is close enough for deliveries to be made on foot.

Limited-edition T-shirts will be on sale, as well as artwork by The Tribes, which created the shop’s logo and sign.

Cole’s Corner opened yesterday.

The election results were screened in the evening – so people could drown their sorrows or celebrate on the first night, depending on their political persuasion.
