The driver smashed into the front left-hand side of her neighbour's car at such speed that it was forced into the back of Ms McDiarmid's seven-seater.

She said: "The boot of our car has been smashed in. It's very worrying as that's where my five-year-old sits in the back. It just doesn't bare thinking about."

Neighbours left their homes to check the extent of the damage but found that the driver had quickly fled the scene.

The abandoned car was later found badly damaged on Furnace Lane.

Posting on Facebook, Rebecca said: "Oh my god, thank God out families weren't in the our cars.

"The driver has driven off and left us to clean up their mess. If anyone knows anything, sees a smashed up car or someone injured please get in touch as it hit the neighbour's car with some force."

Anyone with any information should contact police on 101.
