A NASA flight controller who was at the heart of all the Apollo moon missions is to be the special guest at a Sheffield event this summer.

Sy Liebergot will talk at the Something Astronomical day to be held at The Showroom, on Paternoster Row in the city centre, on Saturday, June 28.

Sy was a key member of the mission control team in Houston in the 1960s and 70s, and was involved in the Apollo 11 moon landing and the ill-fated Apollo 13 flight.

He was the man who gave the order to abort Apollo 13’s lunar landing, and was later an adviser on the hit film in which he was played by director Ron Howard’s brother Clint.

He later went on to work on the Skylab missions, the Apollo-Soyuz orbital rendezvous flight, the Space Shuttle programme and was an adviser on the International Space Station.

Organiser Nigel McEnaney said the event was the biggest yet by the Sheffield group.

He said: “We are a not-for-profit organisation that runs mostly free events educating people about space and the benefits to science and technology.

“This is our big day of the year which helps raise money to fund the free things we do. Past guests have included NASA astronauts, film makers, astrophysicists and authors.

“Sy is a giant of space exploration history.

“It is becoming increasingly rare for people directly involved in the moon landings to give presentations in the UK, so we are very lucky.”
