Mystery over Chesterfield building's future

The former Abacus bar shut in January after the company which operated it, Enjoy Pubs Ltd, was closed under insolvency legislation.

The three-storey building on St Mary’s Gate was put up for sale by agents Christie + Co with a 13-year leasehold costing £40,000 and yearly rent of £76,000.

The building has now been taken off the market – although it has not yet been sold.

Sally Hooker, of Christie + Co, said: “The bar has been taken off the market by the administrators.

“We understand that the administrators are in talks with Enjoy Pub’s creditors as to the building’s future.”

Companies House documents show a High Court judge ordered that Plymouth-based Enjoy Pubs Ltd be wound up under the provisions of the Insolvency Act after a creditor petitioned for such action to happen.

The Abacus opened in February, 2011, and was a popular nightspot in the town.

Projected net sales for 2015 were £570,741. Turnover was £710,724 during 2014.

The building was previously home to the Barracuda bar.

A number of people lost their jobs when the Abacus bar closed and many town revellers were sad to see it shut.
