We’ve had yet another British summer with weather to forget. And autumn is now upon us, so we can see that the nights are already starting to draw in.
Thankfully it was not a washout for everyone .
That is because thousands of passengers have been flying from Doncaster Sheffield Airport to enjoy a summer break in the sun!
Popular routes from South Yorkshire this summer were Palma, Majorca, Ibiza and Lanzarote.
There were also lots of people also enjoying a city break on one of our newest routes to Dublin.
The airport is now in its 10th birthday year and we are still celebrating lots of success.
In fact there was another new route from Doncaster which started only last week, with Wizz Air taking passengers from Yorkshire to the Polish city of Lublin.
Lublin is the largest Polish city east of the Vistula River.
It has been called the ‘Gate to the East’ and is often referred to as ‘little Krakow’. This new destination takes our route portfolio with Wizz to 10.
Looking ahead we’ve got October half term coming up.
That is traditionally a time of year when lots of families take the opportunity to grab some winter sun, especially after the wet weather we’ve had at home this year.
We’ve also got the Christmas getaways where people say goodbye to the cold and head off to the Mediterranean for a festive time relaxing on the beach, or pop to Dublin for a city break ahead of the big day!
This year, to add a bit of magic to the season, we’ve also got a number of trips to see Father Christmas.
That is through flights which will take passengers to see him at his home in Lapland.
Not wanting to wish 2015 away but we will start 2016 in celebration mode as the much anticipated FARRRS Link Road opens to the public in the early part of the year.
When the road is open it will reduce drive time between the airport and Sheffield to 25 minutes.
It will also knock around 15 to 20 minutes off most journeys.
That will double the number of people who live within half an hour’s drive time to one million and increase the number who live within an hour’s drive from five to six million.
These factors will attract more airlines to Doncaster Sheffield Airport and will encourage existing airline partners to offer more routes and destinations from Finningley in the future.
So we’ve been celebrating throughout 2015 and I’m sure that 2016 will bring even more reasons to celebrate the growth of our regional airport.
