MY FAVOURITE THINGS: Sarah White on the diversity of Doncaster

Welcome to My Favourite Things where residents share their thoughts and feelings on the place where they live. Here's what Sarah White had to say...

How long have you lived in Doncaster and whereabouts?

I was born in Doncaster and lived there until I was 26, but have since moved to the outskirts to be in the countryside.

I have two daughters, aged 10 and 14, who keep me on my toes every minute of the day.

What, if any, involvement do you have with local groups?

I work for Bawtry Eye Academy Opticians which is located in Dower House Square, Bawtry.

Every day brings something different so having to be versatile and ready for a challenge is essential.

On the whole I find my job very rewarding, helping people to see better and look great. I have recently been appointed vice chair of the Bawtry Retail Association and have other roles such as treasurer of the Local Optical Committee which covers Doncaster and Bassetlaw and am a member of the Bawtry Neighbourhood Plan steering group.

What is it you like about living in Doncaster?

I love the diversity of Doncaster, never having to travel far to find just the right place to visit, eat or walk.

My girls and I love to go for long walk, go ice skating, visit great restaurants and Doncaster is just full of opportunities to live life to the full.

Do you have a favourite hidden gem in Doncaster?

My hidden gem is Sunnybank Gardens and Yorkshire Ice Cream Park.

It’s the most amazing ice cream and would definitely recommend!

It’s only a stones throw from Bawtry so easy to visit often.

What would be your favourite day out?

My favourite day out would be to go into the Dales for a long hike followed by a nice pub lunch in front of a real fire. Otherwise I love to walk round the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, near Bawtry, to spend time with the animals.

What is your favourite pub/place to eat?

My favourite pub is the King William in Scaftworth, near Bawtry, that does the most amazing food and has such an amazing atmosphere.

I have other places on my list but this one is at the top.

Do you have any hobbies? What do you do in your spare time?

I love to walk and have recently done the Yorkshire Three Peaks for charity. I also go regularly to boot camp, its great fun getting muddy and I feel great at the end of it.

I like to take my girls out to try activities that are a bit out of the usual.

Our favourites are ice skating at the Dome and sledging (at Xscape), then next one is a helicopter lesson at Doncaster Airport!

Favourite book?

My favourite books are the Scarpetta novels by Patricia Cornwall...not for the feint hearted!

Favourite film?

My favourite films are Silence of the Lambs, and, of course, the new Bridget Jones movie!

What sort of music do you like to listen to?

I listen to a wide variety of music, but my favourite is Oasis “Stand By Me”, but my children aren’t enamoured so it’s usually the latest “pop” songs!

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life what would it be?

If there was just one meal I could eat for the rest of my life it would be a good ribeye steak followed by lemon meringue pie.

You’re stranded on a desert island and you can be joined by one other person - dead or alive - who would it be?

I would love Sarah Millican to join me on a desert island, there’d be nothing to hear but laughter!
