SCIENCE enthusiasts will get a rare chance to observe the sun safely using specialist equipment.

Sheffield Astronomical Society is hosting Sungazing Live and Perseid Meteor Watch at the Mayfield Environmental Centre, David Lane, Fulwood on Saturday. The event, which starts at 2pm, gives people the chance to see sunspots and solar flares.

Those who attend will also be able to talk to society astronomers to find out more about the planet’s nearest star.

The sungazing session will be followed by a chance to marvel at the Perseid meteor shower which comes every year, beginning in late July and stretching into August.

The meteor watch event is weather dependent.
