MURDER TRIAL: Accused was '˜Mr Big' of drugs gang

Marvis Smith, aged 30, one of four defendants charged with Mr Bodell’s murder, was also referred to as ‘the enforcer’ with a ‘hard-won’ reputation by prosecutor Adrian Waterman.

Father of two Mr Bodell, aged 23, was killed in a shooting on Manor Fields Park in June 2014 after a night drinking on Manor Top with brothers Corrie and Christopher Allen.

Sheffield Crown Court previously heard the Allen brothers were locked in a dispute with Smith and his associates over a stolen neck chain and a stolen firearm.

After a confrontation between the rival gangs at the Embassy Club, in Mansfield Road, Corrie Allen fired a shotgun in the club car park.

In the context of that shooting, Mr Waterman said: “There is no way Marvis Smith could let it go unpunished.”

He said the ‘confrontational act’ from Corrie Allen was the ‘last straw’ for Smith.

Mr Waterman said: “He saw himself as Mr Big, the enforcer, the one with the reputation hard won over the years.”

Making his final submissions to the jury, Mr Waterman reminded them that phone data placed all four defendants at the scene of the crime around the time Mr Bodell was murdered.

He also told the jury that a Vauxhall Corsa – which was driven by one of Smith’s associates and had been shot at by Corrie Allen at the Embassy – has never been recovered.

Mr Waterman said: “If the shooting of Grant Bodell was not carried out because of the events at the Embassy, why would anybody need to get rid of that Corsa?”

He also reminded the jury that Smith was jailed in 2003 for being part of a ‘joint enterprise’ when a man was shot in the leg.

Mr Waterman said: “This leopard has not changed his spots and careful consideration shows that he was not only involved but had orchestrated the shooting.”

Marvis Smith, 30, of Park Grange Road, Norfolk Park, Torrington Smith, 26, of Samuel Close, Norfolk Park, Stevin Pierre, 24, of Waterslacks Close, Woodhouse, and Brendon McFarlane, 22, of Hyde Park Terrace, Park Hill, all deny murder.
