A Sheffield mother is appealing for parents to help her thank midwives across the city in the New Year.

Mum-of-two Rachel Gardner, who is chairwoman of Maternity Services Liaison Committee, is asking anyone who has had a baby in the last 10 years to send in a picture of themselves and their child with a sign saying what they appreciated most about their midwife.

Rachel said she started the campaign after realising many mums and dads were grateful to their midwives – but rarely got a chance to thank them.

She said:“It’s something midwives would really appreciate but it doesn’t get passed on to them as when you’re in labour as you’re rather busy and by the time you really get to think about it, it can be after they have left or even weeks later.”

More than 70 photographs have been sent to Rachel so far and she plans to create a slideshow to show to midwives across Sheffield.

The 38-year-old said: “The more photos we get the more powerful a thank you message it will be.

“I think midwives are all so impressive with the compassion that they show.

“It’s in the little things like holding your hand. You are really vulnerable when you are giving birth and you do need that.”
