A Sheffield mum is launching a nearly new sales market in the city, aimed at cash-strapped parents.

Sam Jenkins said: “I heard about mum2mum market when I was living in Oxfordshire and could see what a great idea it was.

“Now, having moved to Sheffield, I am so excited to be giving local parents the opportunity to buy great quality secondhand goods or make some much-needed cash from their outgrown children’s stuff.

“I know myself how much money you can save by buying nearly new and it’s always good to recoup some of that cash when clothes and toys have been outgrown!”

Sam said that mum2mum was already popular in London and the South East.

All goods for sale must be in excellent condition and sellers keep 100% of their proceeds on the day, said Sam.

Novice sellers are coached prior to the event with sellers’ tips and pricing guides to maximise their sales on the day.

She reckons that large items like designer prams and large toys sell for about one third of the retail price, whereas baby and children’s clothes start at just 50p.

Mum2mum market was started in 2011 by mum-of-two Cath Harrop. Having bought and sold on eBay and at car boot sales, Cath realised there was a need for an event which brought together local parents so they could sell to each other face-to-face.

Cath said: “I found eBay frustrating as a buyer and expensive as a seller and buying a pushchair that turned up filthy and broken was the final straw.

“I was convinced there must be a better way and mum2mum market was born!”

She now has a network of mums running their own mum2mum markets across the UK.

Goods for sale range from large items such as designer prams, large toys and cots to toys, books, baby equipment and clothes from newborn to age six.

The next mum2mum market is at Hillsborough Trinity Methodist Church, Middlewood Road, S6 1TN on Saturday January 18 from 10am to noon.

Admission is £2 on the door, children get in free and admission is also free after 11.30am for the last half-hour of the sale. There’s a two-for-one entry price offer for buyers who print off a coupon from the website.
