Cally Bell, 30, wants Derbyshire County Council to install the lights at North Wingfield Primary School on Chesterfield Road.

The mum-of-two, whose five-year-old-daughter attends the school, has started paper and online petitions which have so far been signed by more than 500 people.

Cally, who lives in North Wingfield, said: "The road is ridiculously busy every morning and afternoon.

"It's a main road through to Chesterfield and buses pass every ten minutes.

"Our children's safety should be a priority. We ask the council to provide North Wingfield Primary School with a controlled crossing outside it.

"The road is currently an accident waiting to happen."

A county council spokesman said: "There are two zebra crossings to help pupils safely cross the road to North Wingfield Primary School and a public footpath provides further access to the site.

"Since the new school was opened last summer we have been monitoring the situation and will consider the petition when it's submitted."
