SCRAPPING plans to change parliamentary constituency boundaries has been welcomed by a South Yorkshire Labour MP.

Denis MacShane, who represents Rotherham, has spoken out after the plans, which would have seen the loss of 50 seats and his own seat merged with a Sheffield constituency, look set to be rejected.

Conservatives had put forward the proposals but Lib Dems in the coalition said they would only support them if Tories backed their wish for an elected House of Lords, an idea which has been abandoned.

Mr MacShane said: “This should mean Rotherham keeps its three MPs and keeps the Rotherham community linked together instead of being merged with Sheffield.”
