MP’s ‘political ambush’ fears

Have your say

SHEFFIELD Central MP Paul Blomfield has criticised Conservative rivals for opposing the appointment of an academic to oversee efforts to ensure ‘fair access’ to higher education.

The Labour politician, a member of the House of Commons’ business select committee member, has called the attempt to block University of Bedfordshire Vice-Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon from being installed as Director of the Office for Fair Access ‘a political ambush’.

Professor Ebdon was selected for the job by Business Secretary Vince Cable and Universities Minister David Willetts.

Mr Blomfield said: “I hope the Business Secretary will ignore this game-playing and confirm Prof Ebdon’s appointment.”
