SHEFFIELD Central Labour MP Paul Blomfield has written to BBC Director General Mark Thompson to express his opposition to cuts proposed for BBC Radio Sheffield,

The National Union of Journalists estimates that eight of the station’s 45 staff could be made redundant, local broadcasting slashed from 16 hours a day to nine hours and guaranteed local coverage of football matches ended for away fixtures.

Mr Blomfield said: “More programmes are going to be shared regionally with BBC Radio Leeds and York, and they won’t be able to provide the same degree of local Sheffield news and views.

“What is happening locally matters to people and the BBC executives need to recognise that a decline in the amount of Sheffield specific content will lead to a decline in the local Sheffield audience.”
