AN MP has written to NHS chiefs to retain a children’s heart unit nearby for Barnsley families.
Barnsley East MP Michael Dugher said families would face extra travel and costs if the unit for congenital problems at Leeds Hospital moved to Newcastle or Liverpool.
He has written to the chairman of the NHS committee responsible for making decisions about the future of children’s heart services in England and Health Minister Simon Burns MP.
An analysis of views found most people in the area would not choose to travel to Newcastle for treatment.
Mr Dugher said: “All the problems of reconfiguration, such as extra distance and extra cost for families, are minimised if you move the doctors to the patients, not patients to doctors.”
