MP admits his political party needs to be ‘more diverse’

Have your say

Liberal Democrat leader and Shefffield MP Nick Clegg has admitted his party is not diverse enough and it needs to change its image.

Speaking at the Welsh Liberal Democrats’ spring conference in Cardiff over the weekend, Mr Clegg, MP for Sheffield Hallam, told delegates his party is too male and needs to change.

Only seven of the party’s 56 MPs are women, something Mr Clegg said he was less than impressed with.

Mr Clegg said: “We need more Liberal Democrat role models for black and Asian boys and girls, for disabled boys and girls and for young gay men and women too.

“We must be a more diverse party. And we will be a better party for it.”

He also told the conference the Lib Dems’ were ‘doing well’ in their promise to create a fairer society.
