Residents lined the city centre streets at Sheffield’s annual Armed Forces and Veteran’s Day to honour the outstanding contribution made by current members of the armed forces and by veterans of all ages.

The new Lord Mayor of Sheffield, councillor Denise Fox, spoke at the event that featured a military parade, live music, displays from Sheffield Armed Forces and Cadets, careers advice and plenty of fun with a series of 1940’s themed entertainment.

Cllr Fox said: “The event was very well attended, around 200 people turned up and there was a wonderful atmosphere throughout the day.

“All the veterans love getting together and meeting up with their buddies and it was a lovely occasion.

“To see the sense of pride everyone had for the veterans during the march was phenomenal.

“It is so important that we never forget what they did for us and we should continue to honour that and continue to remind future generations about the sacrifices they made so we can be allowed to live the way we do today.”

As well as the parade residents were treated to music from the Ashby Big Band in the Peace Gardens - accompanied by Sheffield’s very own Singing Major, and the sweet sound of close harmony trio “The Bobby Pins”.

The newly appointed Lord Mayor said remembrance is set to be a priority during her year in office.

She added: “The 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme is one of the key themes for my year in office and it is right that my Civic Saturday focused on the city’s commemorations. Next month I will stand with veterans at Sheffield Memorial Park in France to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the Battle of The Somme, where so many Sheffielders lost their lives.

“This city has a proud tradition of remembrance and I am also proud to make this one of the cornerstones of my year in office.”
