Earlier this year an application was submitted by the Watkin Jones Group to Sheffield City Council to build a block of student accommodation on Silversteel House on Rockingham Street.

The development will have a total of 618 bedrooms with accompanying facilities.

If approved, the site will be ready for students to move in by September 2021.

Construction will go ahead under a number of conditions if the plans are approved at a council meeting next week.

A statue of Stantch the Dog, on nearby Bailey Lane, will be kept during the development as well as the outside of the J & Riley Carr building.

In council report, officers said: 'The proposed development, which is considered to be acceptable in land use terms, provides an appropriate scale of enclosure to the eastern side of Rockingham Street and responds positively to the local topography.

'The retention of the elevation of the nineteenth century building fronting Bailey Lane, which includes the well-known statue of Stanch the Dog, is a welcome detail.'

The current property holders are Grunberg, a houseware and catering products supplier, who use it for warehousing, distribution and offices.

The plans by the Watkin Jones Group also include funding Grunberg's move to a new premises with space for expansion.

It will be discussed at a Planning and Highways Committee meeting next Tuesday.Â
