Sheffield Labour MP has written to Business Secretary Vince Cable urging him not to remove the word Sheffield from protected company names.
The change is planned as part of moves to reduce ‘red tape’ affecting businesses.
Currently, use of ‘Sheffield’ in a company name has to be approved by the Cutler’s Company.
Angela Smith, MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, has now objected to removal of protected status after concerns were raised by Sheffield Central MP Paul Blomfield.
Ms Smith said: “Not one firm has asked or said that the protection of the name of Sheffield has caused them extra bureaucracy or a problem, in fact many believe it is a help to them because the city’s name is associated with quality.”
