More than 40,000 bins won't be collected across Sheffield due to worker strike

More than 140 bin workers held a picket line outside Lumley Street service centre this morning in support of the 24-hour strike.

Members of union GMB are unhappy with a rise in disciplinary procedures and ‘severe’ sanctions for employees and have voted for industrial action.

Peter Davies, a GMB organiser in Sheffield said that talks between the union and GMB have been ‘positive today’ but said that there was potential for further strikes in future.

He said: “We have been in talks today and they have been positive but we will see how it goes. Hopefully these will turn out to be meaningful, but if not we will strike again.”

Residents have been asked to leave out their black bins or blue bins and boxes if they are not collected today.

Veolia has said that services will resume as normal when the strike ends and outstanding collections will be made as soon as possible.

Extra crews will be working on Saturday and Sunday to make extra collections.

Francis Drew, contract collections manager at Veolia said: “We hope some collections will be made on Friday, but if your waste is not collected as scheduled it will be collected either on Saturday or Sunday.

“All household waste recycling centres are open.”
