Barnsley Council workers have helped a community group to pay tribute to fallen soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War.

Neighbourhood and Engineering Services workers helped Thurlstone Community Group clear up an area of land to create a remembrance garden where a monument has been placed.

They cleared the land between Towngate and Manchester Road of vegetation before excavating and preparing the foundations, which included removing five tonnes of soil and concreting the area where the monument was placed.

The stone monument is inscribed with the words ‘Lest we Forget’ on one side, and ‘In memory of those who served and those who fell’ on another.

Poppies are also carved into the monument.
