Oddly, Sheffield has had a below average number of rainy days but above average rainfall this May.

According to the Museums Sheffield weather station at Weston Park, Sheffield had the fewest May rain days for 25 years. The city also had the fewest amount of wet days – where there is heavy or constant rain – since 2011.

The city experienced eight days, two less than the monthly average.

But Sheffield had 62mm of rainfall in May – above the 30 year average of 56mm.

Gemma Plumb, meteorologist at MeteoGroup, said: “It’s not entirely uncommon to have high levels of rainfall with fewer days of rain. I expect thunder storms were responsible for the findings.”

Gemma said weather will be improving today, with highs of around 18 degrees.

Sheffield can expect sunny weather over the weekend – and maybe even get chance to bring out the barbecue.

Saturday is predicted to be sunny and warm, with a little cloud overhead and a slight risk of rain.

But Sunday will be the best day. Gemma said Sheffield can expect clear blue skies, full sunshine and highs of 21 degrees – with full sunshine and highs of 21 degrees. Monday should be sunny and warm, but the weather will be more unsettled from there on after.

Gemma said: “In terms of June the weather is looking more unsettled around the middle of the month, with hints of more high pressure ridging towards the end of June bringing more in the way of dry and settled weather and temperatures near to normal for the time of year.”
