A YOUNG boy from Doncaster is bidding for glory on two fronts – at the kickboxing world championships, and maybe in a martial arts movie.
Joe Sutherland is just nine but he is already a four-time British National Champion in freestyle forms as well as being Yorkshire champion.
His success has also drawn attention from talent scouts for a new martial arts film due for release next year, The Law of One, starring Winston Ellis.
Joe and his family, from Hatfield, recently travelled to the NEC in Birmingham for a martial arts show in which he gave a demonstration in front of 2,000 fans.
Joe, who has trained at the East West Mixed Martial Arts club in Armthorpe since he was five, was spotted by martial arts legend Kwoklyn Wan – brother of TV style guru Gok Wan – who invited him to the show.
After his display he underwent an audition for the film and the Hatfield Travis St Lawrence Primary pupil is now waiting to hear if there is a part for him.
Mum Gemma Sutherland said: “They said they liked what they saw and they’d get back to us.
“The main parts in the film are for adult fighters but they might want to fit him in because he impressed them.
“At the moment the most important thing for Joe is the world championships in Montreal in October but he wants to be recognised more widely so likes the idea of film and advertising parts.
“He is extremely excited but he is quite level-headed and we are keeping his feet on the ground.”
