MEP Linda’s peat bog plea

Have your say

SHEFFIELD-based Euro MP Linda McAvan is calling for new labelling laws to help gardeners to choose more environmentally friendly peat-free products this spring.

The Labour politician wants the change to help protect peat bogs - one of Europe’s rarest and most threatened habitats. Peat bogs also act as natural ‘carbon sinks’, storing large amounts of carbon dioxide greenhouse gas.

Linda said: “Despite alternatives being readily available, well over 40 per cent of the horticultural compost sold in the UK still contains peat.”
