Mental health support now available at Sheffield libraries

Sheffield's libraries are now offering a collection of books to provide teenagers with support on mental health issues such as bullying and self-harm.

The Reading Well Collection also offers advice on how to deal with bullying and exam pressures and aims to give young people the tools they need to manage their own wellbeing, to prevent problems becoming more serious.

They are available to borrow for free from Sheffield libraries.

Chief executive of the Tapton School Academy Trust David Bowes said: “From a schools perspective, it is an invaluable resource to be able to signpost youngsters, their parents and carers towards.

“Promoting, protecting and improving our youngsters mental health and well-being is absolutely essential. The collections will also be of great interest to health professionals involved with initiatives such as The Future in Mind project.”

One in 10 young people will suffer from some form of mental health problem.

Sheffield Council hopes initiatives such as the Reading Well Collection can help provide them with the tools they need to understand and manage their own wellbeing prevent any problems becoming more serious.

Cabinet Member for community services and libraries Jack Scott said: “This is a really exciting development, which builds on the work we have been doing with schools and their students to raise awareness and knowledge of mental health issues.

“Books can be an excellent way to equip young people with the tools they need to understand and manage their own wellbeing and emotional resilience, helping our young people manage their problems before they become more serious.”
