Two men are being quizzed today over an attack on a 'gentle' pensioner as he walked to his local mosque.

The men, aged 21 and 29, were arrested last night over an attack on an 81-year-old man in East Dene, Rotherham, in the early hours of Monday.

He was found slumped on the ground off Fitzwilliam Road, East Dene, with serious head and facial injuries.

His family said he had been on his way to morning prayers when he was targeted.

South Yorkshire Police said the suspects are from East Dene, where the attack victims lives.

Detective Chief Inspector Zaf Ali , from South Yorkshire Police’s Specialist Crime Services, said: “We are continuing to follow a number of lines of enquiry including house to house and analysis of local CCTV.

“I am though still keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the area around the time of the incident, which we believe occurred between 3am and 4am in the early hours of Monday morning in an area just off Fitzwilliam Road.

“The victim remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

"Increased patrols by neighbourhood officers will remain in the area to reassure local residents."

Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101.
